Jeremy Witmer on being awarded the Wesbrook and Premier Undergraduate Scholarship

I’m in my 5th year of Engineering Physics, Electrical option, and am graduating this year.  I’ve been interested in physics for a long time, but I chose engineering physics because of the way it equips students to be innovators and to apply theory in useful ways.  My most significant extracurricular activity has been my time with University Christian Ministries (UCM), a club I joined in my first year.  I’ve been involved in various leadership positions within UCM and am currently serving as the president.  One of the highlights of my time with UCM was spending a week in Mexico to build houses for impoverished families. I’ve also volunteered with UBC orientations as a MUG Leader for Applied Science, and have been involved with the UBC chapter of Engineers Without Borders.
I’ve had several excellent research experiences.  I had an internship with General Fusion in Burnaby, performed nuclear physics research at TRIUMF, and did MEMS microphone development with Robert Bosch in Germany. I also spent 4 months at the University of Calgary performing nanophotonics research, and had the chance to present my work at the 2013 Canadian Quantum Information Students’ Conference.
In September I’ll be heading to MIT to pursue a PhD in nanophotonics and quantum optics, with the eventual goal of working in academia. The Wesbrook and Premier Undergrad Scholarship is a tremendous financial boon to me as I head to grad school.
