The Boye Ahlborn Engineering Physics Project Lab

Professor Emeritus Dr. Boye Ahlborn is honoured at the Opening of the refurbished Engineering Physics Project Lab in December 2025.

Project Lab Director Dylan Gunn:

“Boye founded the lab in 1978, when he recognized the need for students to take on real world projects sponsored by industry. Nearly 50 years later, what we call “capstone projects” are now a required part of every engineering program in Canada. Thank you Boye, for your vision and drive 50 years ago to make this happen, and for your tremendous financial support over the past few years.

Boye’s advice: If you really believe in something, you have to find a way to make it happen. Don’t give up.

We’d also like to thank the alumni who contributed to this project specifically, Colin Harris and James Taylor, and those who have significantly supported our endowment over the past few years: James Taylor, Carl Hansen, Andrew Booth, and Scott Phillips.

And a huge “thank you!” to all the UBC folks who made this project happen, from our department, to facilities, building ops, the architects, IT/AV, the LSAC fund, both of our amazingly supportive deans, and many others  – thank you!

Let’s see what the next 50 years brings!”
