Sagar Malhi

Sagar Malhi:  “The Next 36 pairs us up with some of the most prominent figures in Canada.  It is truly a unique opportunity that allows us to accelerate our personal and professional growth.  Engineering Physics has given me a strong foundation and has helped foster an entrepreneurial mindset through flexible learning.  With an Engineering Physics background we are not just taught how to be good at math, physics, etc., we’re taught how to learn.  I think that is crucial when trying to start a company because there are no well defined roles for anyone.  You need to be able to pick up new skills constantly.  A startup may not be for everyone but I think there are a lot of people that haven’t been exposed to that culture yet.  We’ve been traditionally told to follow the safe career paths but I think there are students out there that will be pleasantly surprised to experience the entrepreneurship environment.  For those that are interested, I highly recommend diversifying their undergraduate courses and potentially taking some business or finance classes along the way.”

Michael Ip:  “The fact that I am in Engineering Physics is a huge plus.  What the Next 36 looks for and in a greater aspect, what is an excellent trait in a startup is the ability to pick up skills and apply them.  I believe Engineering Physics does an amazing job in supplying its students with the confidence to pursue a startup.  If there are any Fizzers that are interested in entrepreneurship, there is one course that I’ve found extremely inspiring – New Venture Design (APSC 486).  That course has gotten my foot in the door for entrepreneurship, and no doubt will do so for those looking to learn more about entrepreneurship as well.”
