Engineering Physics admission differs from other programs and includes a video and interview portion. Admission is based on a mix of your grades and your interview or video. Please read the section below carefully and attend the information session listed at the end if possible.
The interview process for 2021 will be different from prior years.
This year, we will ask you to submit a 5 min video version of your personal statement sometime in early March, at the same time that you apply for an interview. Based on the video and Term 1 grades, we will then invite people to the interview process. Not all applicants will be interviewed – some may not be interviewed because we are confident they will be admitted, and others because we feel that they are unlikely to be admitted regardless of the interview. If Term 2 marks for any student lead us to change our estimates for any student that has not been interviewed, we may contact such students for Zoom interviews late in the process, or after the program selection deadline. This will reduce the number of interviews and give us more time to spend with the students being interviewed. Interviews will take place over Zoom or similar. You do not need to be in Vancouver for this process. In all cases, for students that are not interviewed, we will assign an interview score to them based on the submitted 5 min video.
Sometime around March 1, detailed admissions instructions will become available on this website, including details about what we would like to see included in your 5 minute video submission, and instructions on how to upload it.
Please keep an eye on this website at that time. It is up to you to access this information in a timely way and to apply to the process in time. The videos and application forms will likely be due in mid-March, and interviews for those invited will likely take place in mid – April.
Ultimately, your formal application to Eng Phys will also require you to rank us as your first choice on the ESS 2nd year selection form. If you do this, but do not participate in the rest of the admission process (video and/or interview), you will still have a chance to be admitted though you will be at a disadvantage. If you do not rank us first on your 2nd year selection form you are not considered an applicant (even if you interviewed) and will not be admitted.
To help you navigate this complex process, an information session was held on Thursday February 18. Click here to access the Zoom recording.
You may also bring your questions to the First Year Program Fair (on Zoom), on March 11 (UBC Engineering will announce details). I’ll be there alongside some of our current students to answer any questions you may have.
Sincerely,
Andre Marziali
